The recombinant antigen p41 of 14 kDa is an internal fragment of the 41 kDa-flagellin protein, the major constituent of the endoplasmic flagella. The flagella are contained within the outer envelope of the spirochete, and therefore flagellin is not readily exposed on the surface of the microorganism. However, the first antibodies detected soon after the onset of Lyme disease are specific for the 41-kDa flagellin.
For diagnosis of the disease in dogs, horses and occasionally in beef cattle.
