Monoclonal antibodies with unlimited production offering higher specificity

Monoclonal antibodies offer higher specificity than polyclonal antibodies, as they bind to a single epitope or antigenic determinant of the immunogenic protein. They are obtained by fusing a B lymphocyte from an immunized mouse with a myeloma (tumor) cell to create a hybridoma that produces antibodies indefinitely.

ADVANTAGES

• High specificity: Lower cross-reactivity and fewer false positives.

• Reproducible: They can be produced in large quantities with consistent quality.

• Unlimited production: Eliminates the need for repeated animal immunization.

DISADVANTAGES

• More expensive and slower production: Requires advanced technology (cell culture).

• Lower sensitivity in certain assays: Because they recognize only a single epitope, binding can be compromised if the antigen undergoes conformational changes.
