Polyclonal antibodies

Polyclonal antibodies are typically obtained from large animals such as rabbits, goats, horses, pigs, or sheep, which can yield large amounts of antiserum. These antibodies are a complex mixture of different B cells, each producing a specific antibody for a different epitope of the immunogen protein. As a result, multiple distinct antibody molecules are generated with a broad range of affinities, binding simultaneously to the protein. This leads to an amplification effect, making the protein easier to detect.

Polyclonal antibodies are capable of recognizing multiple epitopes on the antigen, increasing their capture capacity and resulting in a very strong signal. Additionally, background noise is reduced thanks to affinity chromatography purification. They are the antibodies of choice when high-affinity, cost-effective antibodies are needed. They are mainly used in assays that capture specific antigens in samples (antigen tests).

Our goal is to offer the in vitro diagnostic sector an increasingly broad catalog of polyclonal antibodies, starting with those corresponding to our most requested proteins.

ADVANTAGES

• High sensitivity. They detect multiple regions of the antigen, increasing the signal in assays.
• Easy and quick to produce.
• More resistant to changes in antigen structure.

DISADVANTAGES

• Low specificity. Higher risk of cross-reactivity with similar proteins.
• Greater batch-to-batch variability.
• Non-renewable. Animals must be immunized continuously to obtain more antibodies.
