Neglected tropical diseases

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a group of 20 diseases that affect impoverished populations, mainly in tropical areas. These areas are usually rural, conflict and/or difficult to access areas, where sanitation services and medical care are scarce. They are called neglected because they have not received enough attention from global health programs.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one sixth of the population (more than one billion people) suffer from at least one of the neglected tropical diseases. The concentration of these cases is above all in Africa and Latin America. More than 70% of the countries and territories affected by these diseases have low or lower-middle income economies. To tackle this major health problem, it is necessary to introduce essential health services and medicine distribution in these areas. Vector control through effective veterinary control is also essential, as well as an improvement in health and hygiene conditions. The correct diagnosis of these diseases is crucial, not only for the treatment of patients, but also for epidemiological surveillance and to make good use of antibiotics. According to the WHO, the lack of diagnoses is one of the main obstacles to meeting the objectives that have been set for the control and elimination of neglected tropical diseases.
