Sexually transmitted diseases

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also known as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are diseases that are transmitted primarily from person to person during sexual intercourse (such as syphilis, gonorrhea or chlamydia), but there are others (such as Zika, Ebola or monkeypox) that, although they can be transmitted through sexual contact, are most commonly transmitted by other means. It is also possible to transmit these diseases from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding.

There are more than 30 pathogens that are transmitted through sexual contact, but only eight cause the most common STDs. Of these, 4 diseases are curable - syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis -, and 4 are not - hepatitis B, herpes simplex virus (HSV), HIV and human papillomavirus (HPV) -. Symptoms vary depending on the person and the cause, and many may not show any symptoms even if they are infected. Sexually transmitted diseases have a direct impact on sexual and reproductive health: stigmatization, infertility, cancer, pregnancy complications and increased chances of contracting HIV. All STDs can be treated with medication, and some of them can be completely cured. To prevent these diseases, it is extremely important to practice safe sex, vaccination, and even measures such as circumcision or the use of microbicides.

According to the WHO, more than one million sexually transmitted diseases are contracted every day around the world, the majority of which are asymptomatic. When symptoms do occur, they may be nonspecific. This is why diagnostic tests for sexually transmitted diseases are extremely important.
