VlsE, the major variable surface antigen, is a 35 kDa lipoprotein which contains six variable regions combined with six constant regions. It has been described to be antigenically conserved among strains and species of the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex and it is immunodominant in both human and nonhuman primate hosts.
